Title: Community Organizer Duration: Three months Hours: 20 hours weekly Compensation: $25/hour
ROLE DESCRIPTION
Jahajee is seeking a short-term, part-time Community Organizer who will lead community engagement efforts to grow our base. This role will increase our visibility in the local community, recruit new volunteers and members, and connect eligible people in need to Jahajee crisis services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Raise awareness for our offerings as well as general safety resources (e.g. Know Your Rights) through street outreach, business outreach, outreach at community events, and outreach at faith institutions — introducing us to at least 100 people monthly
Visit and speak publicly at key Indo-Caribbean faith institutions regularly to build trust with leaders and among congregation members, forming pipelines to Jahajee membership in these houses of worship and being an approachable and accessible resource for survivors seeking help
Conduct 1:1 meetings with potential new recruits by phone or in person to build relationships with interested people, identify what matters most to them and what interests they have in common with Jahajee, and ask them to join a Jahajee event, program, or action
Recruit 5-10 new, active people monthly, getting them to attend at least one event within a month of joining Jahajee
Coordinate with Direct Services Manager to ensure people you meet during outreach who need crisis services (emergency funds, therapy, etc.) are receiving timely and appropriate follow up
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated track record of community involvement and grassroots organizing
Existing relationships with local community members, businesses, and institutions
An outgoing “people person” with a warm demeanor who enjoys meeting new people
Excellent and persuasive verbal communicator with public speaking experience
Highly communicative individual who is responsive and transparent about when changes are needed to support them to meet their goals
Highly-organized, meets deadlines, highly accountable, prioritizes time management
Ability to attend events on certain evenings and weekends, as this role requires meeting new people outside of corporate working hours
Ability to be present multiple (2+) times a week in South Richmond Hill, Queens
Deeply familiar with the Indo-Caribbean community and passionate about winning gender justice for Indo-Caribbean community members
COMPENSATION
This is a short-term, part-time position compensated at $25 per hour.
SUPERVISION
The Community Organizer will report to the two Co-Directors of the organization.
