Programs & Campaigns

DIRECT SERVICES

Through micro-grants, educational scholarships, our food program, and assistance accessing public benefits, survivors and those made vulnerable to gender-based violence are supported to build economic stability.

Leadership & EmpowermenT Institute

Our Leadership & Empowerment Institute (LEI), is an intensive 7-month transformational leadership development program for 20 participants ages 14 and up who are seeking to engage in a personal change process and an entry into gender justice organizing.

Our Institute provides:
1) Personal transformation tools and practices that allow participants to heal from trauma and become bold, courageous leaders

2) Political education that supports participants to build a shared, intersectional gender justice analysis

3) An opportunity for emerging leaders to design and implement advocacy efforts that transform our community.

The program opens and closes with weekend retreats and meets one day a month for workshops. This program is held every 2 years.

Survivor Support Groups

Twice a month, our staff gathers to hold space for survivors of intimate partner violence to process their emotions, share what they are going through, and receive comfort and advice from each other as well as professionals in the field. With a background in social work and mental health, our Direct Services Manager leads these tender healing spaces.

One group is held in person, and one is held virtually.
Our support group is open to all women and gender-nonconforming people of Indo-Caribbean heritage who have experienced domestic violence, dating violence, or sexual assault. In person support groups are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 6PM-7:30PM in Richmond Hill, Queens. Virtual support groups are held on the third Tuesday of every month from 6:30-7:30PM.

To join a support group in person, email hello@jahajee.org. Location will be shared after your RSVP.

Community Circles

Community Circles are spaces where we introduce people to Jahajee, offer programming for wellness, and build supportive relationships. Circles encourage personal reflection, storytelling, and connection to others.

We utilize breathing exercises, meditation, journaling, art, and movement to support participants to feel grounded and strong. Each Circle focuses on a theme. Community Circles are held monthly.

Sexual Assault Speakout

Our annual sexual assault speakout brings community together to witness the brave voices of survivors and allies as they tell their stories and express their rage through narrative, poetry, and art. This event is a soft, nonjudgmental space for survivors to express their emotions, feel their power, and know they are not alone.

Campaigns

Domestic Worker Rights

Many of the survivors we serve are new immigrants who do the important work of caring for children, elders, and the home.

We have joined with partners across New York to implement protections for them and make sure they know their rights.

We also fight for the rights of all workers, regardless of immigration status or the kind of work they do, to receive unemployment benefits.

Reproductive Justice

As part of New Yorkers for Equal Rights, we are fighting for protections against discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, sex—including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, reproductive healthcare and autonomy.

This fight is crucial at a time when politicians and courts are rolling back our fundamental rights, including the right to abortion.

Teach us Our History

We are working with Asian American organizations, students, and teachers to bring Indo-Caribbean history, along with the histories of New York’s diverse Asian American communities, to public school students.

Knowing the high rates of depression among Indo-Caribbean girls and queer youth, our efforts aim to build their self esteem, reduce bullying, and improve their mental health.
